During Soviet times, they were forgotten and disappeared, but in our time they are being revived. One of these is Slobozhansky, also known as Starobilsky finger painting. Do you know what is special about this painting? – it is made with fingers, and also in a spiral. Slobozhansky painting is a decorative decoration of quite practical objects. Brief history of Slobozhansky painting:
Once, in the distant 17th century, the modern Kharkiv, Sumy, Luhansk and a little bit of Donetsk regions had a single name – Slobidska Ukraine or Slobozhanshchyna. These territories during the times of Kyivan Rus were settled by free Cossacks from the north, and they began to build their settlements – slobodas there. Then they were joined by people from Chernihiv, Poltava, and Middle Dnieper regions. Thus, an entire ethnic region gradually formed, with its own unique folk culture and crafts.
Brief history of development of Slobozhansky painting:
Slobozhansky, belongs to the little-known paintings of Ukraine. In Soviet times, only Petrykivka painting was known, making it a souvenir product on a black background, which, by the way, is not typical of it.
Slobozhansky was forgotten altogether, and it almost disappeared. But in the early 2000s, 4 craftsmen in the city of Starobilsk, Luhansk region, began to revive it. Slobozhansky painting is a decoration of quite practical objects. It decorated the whitewashed walls of village houses, kitchen boards, bowls and wedding chests. But the peculiarity of the painting is that it is performed in a mixed technique – with a finger and brushes.
Finger painting technique is the basis of Slobozhansky painting. It is in this way that masters of folk art left their mark on the history of folk art. This is a bright, life-giving and unique floral ornamentation.
